An original, hand-printed, hand-painted letterpress print—this is not a reproduction! This piece is part of the “Local Conditions” series, which depicts Washington’s Mt. Rainier from a variety of different vantage points.
Mount Rainier stands in near silhouette on an early winter morning in Tacoma, Washington. The day is shaping up to become clear and sunny, but as is so common on cold Pacific Northwest days, a bright white, pea-soup fog lingers over the Sound. The mist is just starting to burn off, revealing the hillside skyline and rooftops of Tacoma, and the maritime industry of Commencement Bay and the Port of Tacoma. “The Mountain,” as it’s nicknamed here, rises from the fog, seeming to float over the scene, with the odd, flat discs of lenticular clouds drifting overhead. Clouds above, and clouds below—on days like this, the Pacific Northwest is a floating world.
