Well, I wouldn’t exactly call this statue the handsomest Paul Bunyan in the world, but you gotta love that plaid shirt and winning smile. He’s got plenty of moxie—which makes me think Portland is the perfect place for him.

On your travels if you ever make it to Bangor, Maine or somewhere along northern route 101 in the California RedwoodsNational and State Parks, you can also find Paul Bunyan statues. The one in California is at a retro tourist place called Trees of Mystery and someone actually sits in Paul’s head and might say things to you while you admire and sketch. Just mentioning in case you have a hankering for more Paul and Babe’s in your life.
Heck, yeah! I’m sure my Trees of Mystery sketches will end up on the blog eventually; I love that place. I’ve also seen the Bangor statue in person, but not since I was a kid. So no sketches of that one yet…hopefully it’ll happen someday!
