Yep, there’s actually a term for this retro style, for all those midcentury space-age motels, drive-ins, what have you: Googie Architecture. There are a zillion examples out there, and the possibilities are seemingly endless, but one thing is for certain: you know it when you see it. And in terms of Googie style, Route 66 might as well be the road to Mecca.

Ooooooo – do you know about the fabulous motel sign just east of the Columbia River … have to find the photos and send you. Your pen and a page of your sketchbook would make short work of it I’m sure!

Ha! Actually, I have to confess: it’s that hand-painted misspelling that attracted me in the first place. I’m a sucker for that sort of thing, like the Ho-made Soups sign in Wisconsin, or a ghost sign that used to advertise whiskey in North Dakota, which said “It’s from KENTUKY.” So good.
